State’s best high school broadcasters compete Carmel, Martinsville take top overall honors at University of Indianapolis Carmel, Martinsville and Franklin Central high schools were among the big winners Monday in the annual Indiana Association of School Broadcasters’ High School Broadcasting Competition and Conference, conducted each year in the radio and television facilities of the University of Indianapolis. Reprising last year’s results, Carmel High School was named the state’s Radio School of the Year, and Martinsville High School was named Television School of the Year. Carmel claimed 16 group and individual awards, 13 of them in radio, and Martinsville took six awards in TV categories. Other top contenders included Franklin Central High School, with 10 awards, and Ben Davis High School and J. Everett Light Career Center, which claimed eight each. Nearly 500 students from throughout the state attended the event, which also included information sessions on media-related topics. Professional broadcasters served as speakers and competition judges. Entries in some categories were submitted as recordings and judged in advance, but the finals in key TV and radio categories were conducted live Monday at UIndy. The radio finals were broadcast to the public on UIndy station WICR-FM/HD, whose general manager, communication instructor Scott Uecker, is president of the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters
